In Bloom

In Bloom began as a simple study of floral and plant patterns. I often incorporate vegetation and flowers in my work, doing quick sketches or prolonged studies to explore forms that speak to me. But as the painting progressed and the forms started “speaking” back, I found myself thinking about gardens. Garden architecture, philosophy, and the idea of cultivated space. Persian gardens, or gardens anywhere in the world, have historically been connected to notions of Eden, ideal paradise, perfection, beauty, and prosperity.

My gardens, however, are not inspired by traditional patterns or forms. Instead, they challenge the very ideas that garden builders sought to achieve. Historically, were we successful in building paradise on earth?

My personal answer unfolds through this series. I am fascinated by the interplay of beauty and unease. My goal was to create gardens that are beautiful yet carry a shadow of suspicion and discomfort. Gardens you long for and admire, but would hesitate to enter. Gardens where something is missing.
